When Jesus was arrested and taken into the high priest’s house, Peter followed at a distance. Only a little while before, he had been the disciple who had said that he was ready to go with the Lord both to prison and to death. But at the place where the Lord was actually being led away, his heart was not the same as the words he had boasted. He sat with the people by the fire kindled in the midst of the courtyard, and Luke records, “A certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, ‘This man was also with Him.’ But he denied Him, saying, ‘Woman, I do not know Him’” (Luke 22:56–57).
