After Peter went outside and wept bitterly, Luke turns our eyes to Jesus, who was under arrest. The men who held the Lord did not stop at doing the task entrusted to them, but, just as the word says, “The men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him” (Luke 22:63), they mocked and beat Jesus. In the conduct of those who thought they could treat an arrested man as they pleased, the heart of a sinner is revealed. But the One who stood before them was not One who deserved to be despised by people, but the Lord, who had made them and had come to save sinners.
