Once we come to know someone’s past wrongs, whatever that person says, we first become suspicious. Even when we hear him say that he will change, the old assessment comes first, and we may even regard with displeasure the person who willingly meets with him. The people who saw Jesus going into the house of Zacchaeus in Jericho were just such people. Yet in that very place, which the people murmured about as the house of a sinner, the Lord declared that salvation had come. How did such different words come to be spoken while looking at the same person and the same house? If we follow this difference, we come to know the will of the Lord, who came to find sinners, and the change that His grace brings about.
