There are times when, though we say we wait for the Lord, after we finish the day we find that we have thought of nothing but the worries of making a living. We were busy bearing the work we had to do, but the word of the Lord, who saved us, has in fact grown distant from our hearts. Jesus, after He had finished speaking all the serious words concerning the last day, warned the disciples in conclusion not to fall into exactly this state. “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly” (Luke 21:34). We must look carefully at the fact that He placed the cares of this life side by side with carousing and drunkenness.
