Show Notes

When people spoke about the beautiful stones and donations of the temple, Jesus spoke of the end of what they were looking at. That temple had been extensively renovated and expanded by Herod over many years to win the favor of the Jews. Here, “beautiful stones” refers to the splendid stones used to adorn the temple, while “donations” refers to the gifts that people had dedicated to God. To that extent, this temple was the pride and self-respect of the people of Israel. Luke begins that conversation as follows: “As some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said” (Luke 21:5). When people’s attention gathered on the visible temple, Jesus led their gaze before the word of God.
