When new buds come out on the trees, we naturally know that summer has drawn near. Even though the heat of midsummer has not yet come, we see the change before our eyes and think of the next season. Jesus took up this familiar matter to teach how the disciples were to accept the word they had heard before. “Then He spoke to them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near’” (Luke 21:29–30). The Lord did not demand calculations that are hard to understand, but led them out of the dullness of a heart that sees yet does not consider the meaning.
