Over Jesus’ cross there was an inscription saying the King of the Jews. Beneath it, the rulers and the soldiers mocked Him, saying that if He was a king He should save Himself. People regarded escaping from the cross as the power of a king, but the Lord was taking that punishment in order to give life to sinners. This text shows where the Lord’s eyes were directed, from the road leading to the Cross until the moment He hung upon it. When we know whom the King who did not save His own body saw on that road and for whom He spoke, we come to believe rightly in the King of the Cross.
