The words of the people who asked Jesus about the matter of taxes were polite, but their purpose did not lie in learning the word. For the leaders, who had understood that the earlier parable of the vineyard pointed to them, were looking for a way to seize Jesus. When one realizes one’s own fault, one may submit to the word, or one may try to get rid of the One who preaches that word. Today’s text shows that what a person knows and with what heart he treats it can be different from each other.
