When day broke, the elders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes gathered and led Jesus into the council. Just as the word says, “‘If You are the Christ, tell us.’ But He said to them, ‘If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go’” (Luke 22:67–68), they demanded that Jesus tell them if He was the Christ. Outwardly it sounds like a question confirming who He is, but Jesus’ answer reveals that they were not asking with a heart to hear the word and believe. The Lord knew not only the outward form of the question but even the heart of the one asking.
