There is in us a heart that wants to reckon up the days gone by and come before God anew. When we reckon them up, there are things we did well and things we did poorly. In this word our Lord said that a certain noble person came to go into a far country to receive royal authority and return. As that master went to the far country, he called ten servants and gave them one piece of money each. And it says that he went away telling them to do business well with this money and, when he returned, to have earned much and give it back to him, since it was what he had given them. But among the citizens there were people who did not want their master to become king. At any rate, the master left, and the servants went on living. Some of the servants did business very well. One earned ten minas with the one mina the master had given and offered it, and another earned five minas. The master spoke the same way. He told them to rule over ten cities and over five cities. He gave them authority. But one person who had received one mina came and told the master that he had brought here, intact, the one piece of money that the master had given and left. As for why he had brought this money back just as it was, he said that the master was a tyrant and a very austere man, and that he could not at all stand the master, who gave him one piece of money and told him to do business with it and offer it to him, so he had kept safe what the master had given, and since the master had returned, he had brought it.
