When Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; since he came to see before him the One he had long wanted to meet, outwardly he seemed to welcome Him gladly. But Luke makes clear that the reason Herod was glad was that he wanted to see a miracle. Even if one has the heart to want to meet Jesus, what one hopes for in trying to meet Him is what matters. If a person who must be delivered from sin waits only for a spectacle before the Savior, he may fail to accept the Lord even in that close place.
