A proper trial is one in which the innocent person is released and the person who has committed a crime receives punishment. But in Pilate’s court the opposite happened. Jesus, who heard the words that no reason for death had been found in Him, was delivered up to the Cross, and Barabbas, who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, was released. In recording this reversed outcome, Luke shows what the crowd demanded and what Pilate chose. Following this event, we come to see not only man’s injustice but also the grace of Jesus, who stood in that place to give life to sinners.
