Before Jesus spoke a new word to His disciples, He made them look back on the way they had already traveled. “And He said to them, ‘When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?’ So they said, ‘Nothing’” (Luke 22:35). The disciples answered that they had lacked nothing when the Lord sent them out. It was not a way they had managed because they had ample provisions in their own hands; they had received the care needed to do the work the Lord had entrusted to them. The disciples, who would face hardship in the future, first had to remember who it was that had sent them out and cared for them.
