Beside the Lord, who had said that He would give up His own body and blood, the disciples weighed one another’s greatness. Luke records as follows: “Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called “benefactors.” But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves’” (Luke 22:24–26). The Lord was speaking of His sacrifice for them, yet the disciples were disputing over who was higher. Jesus did not leave that dispute as it was, but taught how the life the disciples were to follow differed from the power of the world. We see in this scene that even while being at the Lord’s side, one can have in one’s heart the craving to be higher than others.
