Jesus sat down with the apostles, knowing that He would soon suffer. At the place where death had drawn near, what did the Lord want to leave with His disciples? Luke conveys the Lord’s heart as follows: “He said to them, ‘With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer’” (Luke 22:15). What the Lord earnestly desired was not only to have a meal with His disciples, but that they would know and believe in the body and blood of the Savior, which He was giving for them. The word of the Lord, who was facing His suffering, turns the hearts of the disciples toward the salvation for them rather than toward the fear they would go through.
