When a beloved person departs from before our eyes, the empty place is felt keenly in the hearts of those who remain. Yet the disciples who saw Jesus off at the end of the Gospel of Luke returned to Jerusalem with great joy and praised God. The Lord had departed, so how could there be joy in them? It was because the Jesus they had seen off was not one held captive by death, but the Savior who had overcome death, risen again, and been carried up into heaven. When we know the salvation the Lord accomplished, the fact that He cannot be seen with our eyes does not mean that we have lost hope.
