Hearing the word up close does not mean that one immediately understands its meaning as well. Even when it is a word one has clearly heard, if it does not agree with one’s own thoughts, one may be unable to accept it in one’s heart. The twelve disciples, who were going up to Jerusalem with Jesus, were like this, too. The Lord spoke of the suffering, death, and resurrection He would undergo, but the disciples did not know that word. This short text shows us both our attitude in knowing the word and the Lord, who goes on accomplishing salvation even when we do not yet understand.
